Research progress on the preparation of renewable JP-10 fuel by lignocellulosic platform compounds of Dalian Institute of Chemical Technology
Recently, Li Ning, a researcher at the Institute of Catalysis and New Materials Research Center of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhang Tao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have developed two new routes to produce renewable JP-10 high-density fuels using furfuryl alcohol, a lignocellulose platform compound. Related work was published in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.
The synthesis of renewable aviation fuels using lignocellulose as a raw material is an international research hotspot for catalytic refining of biomass. At present, domestic and foreign reports of lignocellulosic aviation kerosene have mainly focused on the synthesis of ordinary aviation kerosene. JP-10 fuel (hanging tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene) is a classic single-component high-density aviation fuel. Compared with ordinary aviation kerosene, JP-10 fuel has obvious performance advantages in terms of density, freezing point, thermal stability, etc., so it is also called "super fuel". At present, JP-10 fuel is usually prepared from cyclopentadiene from fossil resources, and the price is high. Because of the limited raw material resources, it cannot be widely used in civil aviation.
Furfuryl alcohol is an important chemical obtained from the hemicellulose part of agricultural and forestry wastes. It has a history of industrial production for decades. This work has developed two new routes for the synthesis of JP-10 fuel using furfuryl alcohol as a raw material, yielding a yield of approximately 65% (calculated in carbon). After preliminary economic analysis, the biomass route can greatly reduce the cost of preparing JP-10 fuel.
