Hydroxy propyl methy cellulose

  • Detailed Description

Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose

Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is a non-ionic cellulose ether produced from high-molecular-weight fiber materials through a series of chemical processes. It is an odorless, tasteless, non-toxic white or slightly off-white free-flowing powder that swells in water to form a clear or slightly turbid colloidal solution. Featuring thickening, binding, dispersing, emulsifying, film-forming, suspending, adsorbing, gelling, surface-active, water-retention, and protective colloid properties, it is widely used in building materials, coatings, synthetic resins, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, daily chemicals, and other industries.

● Solubility: Soluble in water and some solvents, such as appropriate ratios of ethanol/water, propanol/water, etc. Aqueous solutions exhibit surface activity. High transparency and stable performance. Different product specifications have different gelation temperatures. Solubility varies with viscosity – lower viscosity means higher solubility. Different HPMC grades have certain performance differences. HPMC solubility in water is not affected by pH value.

● Thickening: HPMC offers thickening ability, low salt tolerance, low ash content, pH stability, water retention, dimensional stability, excellent film-forming properties, and broad enzyme resistance, dispersibility, and adhesion characteristics.

● Salt Resistance: As a non-ionic and non-polyelectrolyte, it remains relatively stable in aqueous solutions of metal salts or organic electrolytes.

● Water Retention: Being hydrophilic, its aqueous solutions are highly viscous. When added to mortars, gypsum, coatings, etc., it maintains high water retention in the final product. Water retention rate is above 90%.

● As methoxy content decreases, gelation point increases, water solubility decreases, and surface activity also decreases.

Application Fields

Coatings Industry

Used as a thickener, dispersant, and stabilizer, with good compatibility in water or organic solutions. Can be used as a paint stripper.

Ceramic Manufacturing

Widely used as a binder in the ceramic manufacturing process.

Construction Industry

Used as a water retention agent and retarder for cement mortar, imparting pumpability. Functions as a binder in plastering mortars, gypsum materials, putty powders, and other building materials, improving workability and extending open time. Used as an adhesive enhancer for tiling, marble, and plastic decorations, also reducing cement consumption. HPMC's water retention prevents cracking due to rapid drying after application and enhances post-curing strength.
